Description

The precision of modern navigation systems reduces the random lateral spacing between aircraft on the same route. When a gross error eliminates all planned separation between two aircraft, in either the longitudinal or vertical dimension, the reduced probability of random spacing in the lateral dimension makes a collision far more likely than it would have been in the past, when lateral deviations from route centre line were far greater due to less reliable navigation performance. Using strategic lateral offset procedures (SLOP) increases the random lateral spacing between aircraft that aim to fly along the same route.

The circular on Implementation of Strategic Lateral Offset Procedures (Cir 354) provides information on establishing the offset values and procedures when applying SLOP. The material in this circular is limited to the application of the SLOP in the en route environment. This may be in airspace where either procedural control or air traffic services (ATS) surveillance control is provided using tracks (either published or described in the flight plan) or ATS routes.

The circular is aimed at a worldwide audience among civil aviation authorities and air navigation services providers (ANSPs) responsible for airspace management as well as aircraft operators and aircrew.
