For centuries, indeed millennia, flight has inspired writers and painters, artisans and engineers the world over. The freedom to soar, to reach the heavens, to touch the stars.
Over the years, Member States of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and international aviation organizations have graciously donated to the ICAO works of art and artefacts that embrace this eternal quest. Others celebrate the wonders of life below, on a planet made smaller and more accessible through the marvel of air travel.
As one turns the pages of this publication, one is struck by the range of media showcased and the unique artistic merit of these precious offerings. Descriptions of many individual pieces were provided by donors; others were inspired by the creations themselves and material gleaned from various sources. All beckon readers to interpret for themselves the inherent messages they carry.
We hope this book will provide an opportunity for a wider public to share in the excitement and appreciation of the thousands of visitors to ICAO every year who, as they attend meetings and special events, take the time to bask in the inspiring beauty of the Assad Kotaite Conference Centre transformed into an art gallery.
