Description

This comprehensive fifteen (15)-hour self-paced online course provides aviation professionals with foundational knowledge of ICAO safety management provisions and their application in State Safety Programmes (SSP) and Safety Management Systems (SMS) at the service provider level. Updated to reflect recent Amendment 2 to ICAO Annex 19 – Safety Management, the course is designed to build awareness, strengthen understanding, and support implementation aligned with global safety strategies. 

 

It also serves as a prerequisite for other ICAO Safety Management virtual and classroom courses that include practical exercises, allowing participants to acquire the foundational knowledge required before engaging in instructor-led courses.

Goal

 

This course aims to provide participants with foundational knowledge of safety management principles and their application at both State and service provider levels. It supports ICAO’s global objectives for effective SSP and SMS implementation and provides practical guidance for personnel involved in developing, implementing, and supporting safety management activities.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the fundamental principles of aviation safety management. 
  • Distinguish between prescriptive and performance-based safety approaches. 
  • Describe the evolution of ICAO’s safety management framework. 
  • Understand the provisions in Annex 19 and guidance in the Safety Management Manual (Doc 9859) and the Safety Intelligence Manual (Doc 10159).
  • Identify SSP and SMS components and elements. 
  • Understand the implementation steps for both SSP and SMS. 
  • Recognize key aspects of developing safety intelligence.

Certificate

The Final Exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The participant requires a grade of 80% to pass. Note that the participant will be granted 3 attempts only. Upon successfully completing the exam, the participant will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
