Description

This course explores how aircraft design, engineering, and life-cycle considerations contribute to sustainable aviation. Learners examine aircraft efficiency improvements, materials selection, manufacturing processes, maintenance practices, and sustainable end-of-life strategies. Interactive examples illustrate how technology advancement and design innovation support environmental performance while meeting regulatory and operational requirements.

This course is included in the Aviation Sustainability online training programme and may also be taken individually. For a foundation in aviation sustainability concepts, learners are encouraged—but not required—to complete Aviation Sustainability: Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before beginning this course.

 

Goal 

This course aims to build foundational knowledge of sustainable aircraft innovation and lifecycle management. Learners will: 

  • Understand how sustainable design principles influence aircraft development. 
  • Explore emerging technologies that enhance environmental performance and passenger comfort. 
  • Identify future aircraft and engine designs that improve efficiency and sustainability. 
  • Recognize how end-of-life strategies contribute to a circular aviation economy.

Target Population


Primary target audience: 

All aviation professionals seeking to develop a baseline understanding of sustainability as it applies to civil aviation, including airline, airport, and regulatory personnel, as well as professionals transitioning into aviation from other industries. No previous background or experience in sustainability is required.

 

Secondary target audience:  

Students, educators, consultants, and support-service providers who wish to understand sustainability principles within aviation operations.

 

 

Evaluation and Certification

 

  • Final Exam: 80% Grade mark/ 3 attempts 
  • Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
